 Ronald C. Groomes, M.Ed

Hailing from Trenton, New Jersey, our school counselor, Mr. Ronald C. Groomes, received his Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies from Old Dominion University in 2011 and his Masters in Counselor Education from South Carolina State University in 2015. With Virginia holding a special familial place in his heart, he was hired by VBCPS in 2016, and he began his educator career as part-time school counselor of New Castle Elementary School. During this time, he had the pleasant opportunity to substitute at various schools throughout the district, begin a brand new men’s program at the elementary school, and become involved with a local male achievement group called the Golden Fold. In 2017, Mr. Groomes proudly became the school counselor of Bayside 6th Grade Campus. With his biggest influence being Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mr. Groomes lives by the mantra, ”If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer someone with a word or song, if I can show a man he is traveling wrong, then my living shall not be in vain”. He aims to be a positive male role model in the lives of each and every child because he sees the potential for all of them to be dedicated citizens and contributors of society.

Monica Fowlkes

Ms. Fowlkes graduated from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She earned a Master of Arts in Urban Education and School Counseling from Norfolk State University. Ms. Fowlkes completed her school counseling internship at Providence Elementary and Brandon Middle. In the spring of 2017, she fulfilled a long term counseling position at Bayside Middle School. During her spare time Ms. Fowlkes loves to spend time with her daughter, family, and friends.  As a product of Virginia Beach City Public Schools attending Bettie F. Williams Elementary, Bayside Sixth Grade Campus, Bayside Middle, and graduating from Bayside High School, Ms. Fowlkes is proud to serve the community that raised her. Her favorite quote is from Maya Angelou, "At the end of the day people won't remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel."  Meeting the individual needs of each student is very important to Ms. Fowlkes. She is looking forward to a successful year with the Raider family!!

Towana Hunter

As a child of a military family, it wasn't until middle school when I found stability. I am a proud graduate of Chesapeake Public Schools. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Elizabeth City State University. After graduation, I joined the United States Army as a Medical Supply Specialist. Due to an injury, my military career was cut short. I spent the next several years working as a Mental Health Technician with middle school age clients. I also worked at SECEP as a School Community Trainer and Teacher Assistant. I also spent a few months working as an In-Home Counselor. Realizing that I truly enjoy working with young people, I decided to get my Master's Degree in School Counseling from Norfolk State University. I had the pleasure of beginning my school counseling career at Landstown High School Governor's STEM and Technology Academy. As I enter my 8th year with VBCPS and my 4th year with the Bayside Community, I am super excited for what the year will bring.
